A clicking drive: the first five minutes

0

A drive that clicks is a mechanical failure in progress, and the difference between a full recovery and a partial one is usually what you do in the next five minutes.

Do not power cycle it looking for a better result. Every spin-up is another pass of the heads over damaged media. Once, to confirm the sound, is enough.

Do not run repair utilities, filesystem checks, or "fix" software on it. Those tools write, and writing to a failing drive is the fastest way to turn a recoverable read problem into a lost platter region.

Do not believe the freezer trick. Condensation on the platters, and it treats symptoms for minutes at best. The era where that sometimes worked is decades past.

What actually helps: if the data matters, unplug the drive and stop. A professional lab with a clean room is the only option for a true head crash, and most quote evaluations before charging. If the drive still reads at all, the home path is a one-shot clone attempt with a tool made for dying drives, like ddrescue, reading straight to a healthy destination and never mounting or writing the patient.

The forum will not judge you for asking what a lab quote should look like. Post the drive model and the symptom, clicking versus beeping versus spinning down; the sound maps to the failure.
