Phone in water: the first ten minutes matter

0

Water damage is not one event, it is a race against corrosion, and the first ten minutes set the terms.

First: powered down, and stay down. Do not press buttons looking for signs of life, and do not plug it in to charge, because current plus water is what turns a wet phone into a dead one.

Second: skip the rice. Rice does not pull measurable moisture out of a phone, leaves starch dust behind, and gives corrosion days of quiet time to work. Airflow matters far more than any desiccant.

Third: the honest physics. Modern phones survive brief splashes more often than people think and longer soaks less often than they hope. Salt water and pool water are worse than fresh, and any liquid with sugar or electrolytes leaves residue that keeps eating traces long after the phone "works again."

The real repair is opening it, disconnecting the battery, cleaning the board and connectors with the right solution, and inspecting for corrosion at the shield can edges and under the display connector. That is bench work, and every day of delay lowers the odds.

If it has been more than a day, powered on, or in salt water, say so in a post; the community can tell you whether a bench visit is worth it for your model.
